What Causes Tenderness And Swelling In Toe?

The toe next to my big toe on my left foot has been tender and slightly swollen for a few days. Today, it got worse - the toes is more tender to touch and more swollen. I dont have health insurance and am hesitant to go the doctor. Any ideas what could be causing this?About me: I'm generally healthy, 140lbs and 5'7''. I have a family history of diabetes, high blood pressure, any some other heart related issues - though currently suffer from none of these issues.
