What Causes Tenderness On The Toe?

woke up this morning with distal end of great toe tender and has become more so through out the day. When I touch the toe and bend it it does hurt in the joint. My Dad suffered years with gout and didn t know if this is hereditary or not. Is it? Soaking in Epsom salts now. Does that help? No diabetes, some arthritis in fingers, I do take glucosomine everyday.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Apart from any injury to the great toe, if it is hurting bad, then either it could be gouty arthritis, or an inflammation probably caused by an ingrowing toe nail. You would have to get your serum uric acid levels, and also Complete blood count with ESR to see for any infective cause. Please give rest to the foot. Please do not be ambulant very much. If the pain persists, you would have to consult a Rheumatologist with theses investigation reports for diagnosis and treatment.
