What Causes The Child To Cry More Frequently?

Hi there, my son is 23 months old and cries his heart out every time I drop him off at daycare. He cries on and off for the teachers after I have left and eventually settles at around 10:30. The teacher says he mainly starts crying if he reminds himself about mummy. My son only reacts this way when he goes to strangers or daycare. When I leave him at grandparents for the day, there is no crying and no issues. What can I do to help with the crying at daycare. I try and comfort him and tell him it s going to be ok. I tell him that I will be picking him up just after his afternoon snack time. But he remains unsettled. Not sure what else to do?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

This would be called separation anxiety and it is a common problem in many children.

Telling him when you are coming back is good. Other recommended techniques are: (a)saying goodbye as quickly as possible so that it is not dragged out
(b)letting him take a comforting object or toy from home
(c)trying your best to keep a relaxed or happy expression on your face though it would be difficult
(d)reading him books that may address separation anxiety

If there is no improvement you may need to discuss other possible techniques with his doctor.
There are also doctors that specialize in helping with these issues if it is very severe.

I hope this helps
