What Causes The Distance Between The Knees While Standing Close And Erect?

i've heard that even though my legs aren't straight, it may not necessarily means i have bowed legs, but because my muscles and tendons are tight. When my ankles are together, there is an around 5 cm wide gap between my knees, yet when i sit down, they are perfectly aligned. What does this mean?
