What Causes The Feeling Of Bad Odor While Sleeping?

I have been waking suddenly from a deep sleep to smell strong odors such as burning rubber or the smell of smoke - only to search the house and find nothing. The smell lingers for a few minutes, then is gone. This has only happened about four times over the past 12 months. I am female, 50 years of age, overweight, take Metformin, Lipitor, blood pressure tabs, estrogen and antidepressants.

Hi, thanks for posting your concern in the HCM.
I think the problem you stated is due to functional disorder. This is most probably an olfactory hallucination. It may be related to your depressive disorder. But, I think the greater chance is that it is related to some adverse effects of the medications you are having for depression.
Please don't worry. If the condition is due to medication, discontinuation of the same and starting another alternative medication will solve the issue.
Whatever the underlying cause is, you should consult your psychiatrist at the earliest for further evaluation.
If you have any further questions, you can write back to me directly. Please also provide information regarding what antidepressant you are using in any related query.
Regards,
Dr. Kaushik
