What Causes Thick Perineum In Between The Anus And Testicles Of An Infant?

My son was born with a thicker perineum that goes from his anus all the way up on his testicles. It is really thick almost looks like scar tissue. He was a preemie that was born 5 weeks early. He was also tongue tied and we had it clipped , I was wondering what causes it as he just turned 1 December 15 , thank you for any useful information as my pediatrician said he has not seen it before. He said unless it was causing any problem with going to bathroom , he will be ok

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

If your son has turned 1 this month and he is otherwise having regular bowel and bladder movements then there is no reason to worry about any serous health problem. The perineum is made of tissues and has the perinieal muscles in the pelvic floor surrounded with fat.

It is important to examine clinically and feel for any suspicious soft tissue swelling in the region or any progressive prominent swelling below the perineum under the skin. If such a swelling is felt then it requires follow up over 3 to 6 months and imaging investigations should there be any suspicion. If there is no such abnormal observation then it is most likely increase in amount of fat below the skin. Please do not worry.
