What Causes Thick Yellow Vaginal Discharge After Radical Hysterectomy ?

i had radical hysterectomy due to first stage uterine cancer a year and a half ago. Last week I went to my gynaecologist for my annual exam. He took a sample for Pap test and all was well. Yesterday I noticed a yellow thick discharge and I m wondering what may be the cause. I also have a pain on my left side in the lower abdomen area. Can you please tell me what may be the cause?

Hi,

You don't need to get apprehensive as pap smear was already done. Any abnormality will be surely detected on pap smear. Coming to your symptoms, the following might be few probable causes:
1) Vaginitis of unremoved vagina
2) Vaginal stump infection

As your discharge is yellow and thick and associated with pain, I suspect it to be infectious. You may need a course of antibiotics if pain and discharge increase or fever sets out. Please collect your pap report without fail.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
