I am 54 yrs old. 5'2 140 lbs. Excellent health. I am findin myself waking in the morning with my arms streched above my head. This leaves me with very tense and aching shoulders. I do not know why I am doing this. It is not the normal position i wake in. It does not happen every night. I sleep on my back. I am concerned why I am doing this. thank you.
I went through your details. You know for sure, body takes up a near comfortable position when we sleep. What ever position, we start out sleep, during deep sleep hours, our body goes to a comfortable position. This is natural and you don't have any choice unless you force it.
In your case, you say, on waking up, you are left with sore shoulders. If you are that much worried, you can force the habit to change. Use a band to tie your hands in a comfortable position. Within two days the body will assume this as natural comfortable position and will amend itself. Nothing to worry about.
