What Causes Throbbing Pain On Right Side Of Neck?

Today a throbbing pain has developed on the right side of my neck. It hurts on the outside, especially if pressing on the skin. If you look very closely, you can see the pulsating. I m a little worried since it s a brand-new occurrence and it seems to be in the exact spot where the carotid artery is located.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Great observation you have.
Indeed a throbbing pain in the carotid region, which is pulsating is characteristic of only 2 things:
1. A lymph node mass on the carotid dancing with it or
2. Problem of the carotid itself in the form of aneurysm or so.

I would advise you the following:
- Consult a Surgeon to have clinical confirmation.
- Color doppler with ultrasonography

Treatment will definitely be as per the findings; antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicines if this is a lymph node or so and reference to Cardio-vascular surgeon if problem of the carotid itself.
