What Causes Tinnitus And Bitter Taste In The Mouth?

About 3 weeks ago I began having a constant hissing noise in both ears and last night I began having a bitter taste. I have not been around loud noises have not noticed any difference in my hearing. Many years ago I did rupture an eardrum and have experienced a minor Long-term hearing loss. I am 64 yrs old and do take many vitamins (special bariatric formula) and minerals (iron, zinc, magnesium, calcium citrate) as I am post gastric bypass of 11 yrs. I also have not had any cold, flu or allergies.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Tinnitus is a common issue and most causes are benign and temporary. However it this lasts for a longer period then it should be evaluated.

Tinnitus can occur due to causes like a chronic ear infection, perforated eardrum, Eustachian tube dysfunction, Meniere's disease, TMJ disorders, Acoustic Neuroma etc.

Tinnitus is not a disease in itself but it is a symptom that indicates that there is some underlying illness. I would suggest you consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like Audiometry, x-ray MRI can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.

In case if ringing does not resolve then you can be advised medicines like Tricyclic Anti-depressant like Amitryptiline, anti-anxiety medication like Alprazolam, as well as Multivitamin supplements can be advised.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein,
General Surgeon
