What Causes Tinnitus And Dizziness After A Head Injury?

What is wrong with my ear? I was swimming just a few hours ago and I jumped off of a diving bored and hit the water head first. I hit pretty hard on the right side of my head. As soon as my head hit the water my ear started ringing and it hurt pretty bad. The pain and the ringing went away. About 10 or 15 minutes later I dove into the pool and my right ear felt really weird under water like a lot of water was rushing into my ear. When I came up my head felt a little dizzy so I sat down and stopped swimming. About an hour later when I got home my ear began to hurt. It feels like inner ear pain. There is a constant pain and when I hiccup or try to yawn I get this awkward bubbly sound in my ear along with a worse pain. Here and there a tiny bit of water has leaked out of my ear but that is about it. If you can explain what is happening and how to stop it I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Tinnitus is a common issue and most cases are benign and temporary. However, this lasts for a longer period then it should be evaluated.

Tinnitus can occur due to causes like chronic ear infection, perforated eardrum, Eustachian tube dysfunction, Meniere's disease, TMJ disorders, Acoustic Neuroma, etc.

Tinnitus is not a disease in itself but it is a symptom that indicates that there is some underlying illness.

I would suggest you consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like Audiometry, x-Ray MRI can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.

In case if ringing does not resolve then you can be advised medicines like Tricyclic Anti-depressant like Amitryptiline, anti-anxiety medication like Alprazolam, as well as Multivitamin supplements can be advised.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
