What Causes Tinnitus At Night While Lying Down?

I hear a noise in my head or ears at night when I lay down. I can t describe it as ringing but a noise that goes up and down in pitch. I first thought it was from something electrical outside the house but then one day before work in the morning I heard it in my ears at work...That s when I knew it was in my head and not outside of my house. No pain, sometimes hard to get to sleep. What could be the cause?

Hi,

As per the complaint, it seems that ringing in ears can occur due to causes like an ear infection, perforated eardrum, excess ear wax accumulation, Eustachian tube dysfunction, Meniere's disease, TMJ disorders, acoustic neuroma etc.

I would suggest you consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like Audiometry, X-ray, and MRI can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.

In case if there is infection you can be advised antibiotics, an anti-inflammatory painkiller, and nasal decongestant sprays. Antibiotic eardrops can also be advised. In case if ringing does not resolve then you can be advised medicines like tricyclic anti-depressant like Amitryptiline, anti-anxiety medication like Alprazolam, as well as multivitamin supplements can be advised.

White noise devices can be advised. You can also be advised neuromodulation. Avoid exposure to very loud sounds and also avoid diving, swimming etc.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
