What Causes Tinnitus While Suffering From Otosclerosis?

I was diagnosed with otoscerolsis a year and a half ago when I complained of a block eared with pulsing tinnutus. I was told the tinnutus was just a part of the symptoms and to live with it. The tinnutus and blocked ear went away after a month or so. I always believed the tinnutus was something else as why would it go away. I was treated for a fungal infection at that time too but had no itch and no obvious Dischargge. A year and a half later, I start getting pulsing tinnutus again, like The previous Time... Starts at night occasionally , until now it s full blown, headaches, low fever, general feeling unwell. The ENT who diagnosed me early last year is too busy to fit me in and says I need to be checked urgently and he is too busy so go somewhere else . I really believe I had euchlucian tube dysfunction.. I fit all the symptoms online. My GP says my ear drum looks fine, would he be able to tell or would I need a specialist to know? Please help, I feel awful and I m so upset and anxiuis with this pulsing tinnutus

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Tinnitus is a common issue and most causes are benign and temporary. However it this lasts for a longer period then it should be evaluated.

Tinnitus can occur due to causes like chronic ear infection, perforated eardrum, Eustachian tube dysfunction, Meniere's disease, TMJ disorders, Acoustic Neuroma etc.

Tinnitus is not a disease in itself but it is a symptom that indicates that there is some underlying illness. I would suggest you consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like Audiometry, x-ray MRI can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.

In case if ringing does not resolve then you can be advised medicines like Tricyclic Anti-depressant like Amitryptiline, anti-anxiety medication like Alprazolam, as well as Multivitamin supplements can be advised.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
