What Causes Tiredness And Grogginess After Sleep?

Regardless of how long/little I sleep during the night, I rarely have dreams anymore. that s not too big of an issue, but I always wake up extremely tired & continue this groggy-agitated state for a couple hours afterward. Why is this? Is there a fix? 16 yrs. old Good Physical Health Don t drink much soda

Hi,

You may have a sleep disorder. There are a couple of possibilities of sleep disorders that would fit this description. Probably the most common would be obstructive sleep apnea which has as its main features, frequent awakenings at night (patient usually not aware) and excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS).

However, other conditions can also produce the same symptoms such as narcolepsy as well as idiopathic hypersomnia (IH) though this latter one has its main feature a major complaint of not being able to wake up no matter how many hours slept.

You'd be well advised to see a sleep specialist or even a neurologist to start the process of making sure other things aren't causing problems such as endocrinological abnormalities having to do with either the thyroid, parathyroid, or adrenal glands and then, as necessary get a sleep study performed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dariush Saghafi,
Neurologist
