What Causes Tiredness, Cold Intolerance And Weight Gain Despite Taking Levothyroxine?

I have been dealing with Thyroid problems for years. I had graves disease and was given radioactive iodine in 1978. Since that time I have a tsh about every 6 mo to check my levels and my medication is adjusted accordingly. My test in Sept 16 was 0.59 taking levothyroxin 75 1/2 pill on Sundays and full tablet the rest of the week. Now I m taking one full tab 6 days a week and none on Sundays and my recent test was 0.95 but I have symptoms of tiredness, cold intolerance and weight gain. My Dr feels my results are in the normal range. Should the lower dose put me toward more of a hypo end or hyper end. Thank you

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hello
I have gone through your question and understood your concern.

Tiredness, cold intolerance and weight gain are common symptoms of hypothyroidism.

It is true that your TSH result is within the normal range but at the other side as endocrinologist i can say that this result is near the lower limit of the normal range(means tendency toward hyperthyroidism).

Actually your symptoms are suggestive of hypothyroidism(not hyperthyroidism) and this situation needs an explanation.

This is my answer for you:The lower dose is Ok according to your actual TSH result but it is not the right think to do considering your actual symptoms.

To clarifie your situation,i suggest to repeat the TSH test and than to discuss with your treating endocrinologist about your symptoms and the right dosis of Levothyroxine.

Don't worry; The second TSH result will give all the necessary information to adjust your Levothyroxine dosis without doubts.

Hope this is helpful.
If you have other question ,feel free and ask.I will be happy to help.
Best regards.
