What Causes Toe Discolouration?

On my second toe I had a discoloration that started at the cuticle and 2 months later it fell off. Now my big toe next to it has the same thing starting at cuticle and also second toe on other foot. It s spreading. I m guessing it s a type of fungus but what kind? What it the most efficient and inexpensive cure? HELP!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history you seem to be suffering from onychomycosis (fungal nail infection). Dermatophytes (like candida) and trichophyton rubrum are the common types of fungi responsible for toe nail infections.

You need to be examined by a dermatologist and once the diagnosis is confirmed terbinafine tablet is the first-line treatment for confirmed onychomycosis and the treatment course is generally 12 weeks for toenails. Other drugs such as itraconazole or griseofulvin are also effective.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
