What Causes Toe, Knees And Hands Swelling With Pain?

My father had a flare up in his Malaria some years ago, had to go into Hospital for injections I believe, then all was ok for a long time. His big toe started to swell and he was prescribed painkillers and think might be gout, now tho he is finding it increasingly difficult to walk, knees and hands are swollen and pain is intense, seems to be sleeping all the time. Just wondering what I should do, force him to go back to his GP after the bank holiday and asked to be referred to someone who deals with tropical diseases. Thanks
