I am 53 years old and have had 3 pap tests that show cell changes (HPV). I have had only one sexual partner ever and we have been married for 32 years. My husband says he has never had another sexual partner either. Is this possible that I could have HPV if neither of us has ever had another sexual partner?
Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic
Cell changes indicative of cervical dysplasia almost always indicate that they are due to HPV. Moreover these cell changes are almost always associated with High risk HPV types i.e types 16, 18, 31. HPV is transmitted sexually from an infected sexual partner. Since you have never been involved sexually with anyone else other than your husband, therefore likely you got the virus from him. HPV can remain clinically silent for months and rarely years and it is possible that your husband acquired it from someone else and then passed it on to you.
