What Causes Tremors, Lack Of Affection And Oversleeping After Breathing In Chemicals?

Hello Doctor, I am concerned about my boyfriend. He is 59 years old and has worked in a factory for 31 years. This factory makes insulated parts and uses primarily rubber to mold product. My boyfriend has been subjected to different types of fumes over the many years and I fear that at times they may have been toxic, causing the symptoms he has today. His symptoms include, tremors of the hands, difficulty holding a conversation, being detached from loved ones, displaying a lack of affection, sleeping a lot, watching tv the time. Over the past year that we ve been together I am noticing a steep decline in his behavior to the point where even his friends are asking me if he s okay. He displays child-like behavior to the point of irritating others. His memory of the past is amazing, but his here and now is confused. I suspect he hasn t balanced his checkbook in many years and he makes me write all his checks for him, one because he simply can no longer hold a pen, and two because he can t remember how to spell the words. His primary language is Spanish, so I at first thought it was just the language barrier for him, but he is quickly declining. His vitamin D3 level is very low and I can see the difference when he takes his supplements and when he doesn t. Is his symptoms part of the aging process or is this something I need to address with his doctor?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your BF is suffering from tremors, he cannot write due to it, he is unable to hold his pen. You are suggested to give him a home made nutritious balanced diet. Sometime, deficiency of vitamin B12, B6, minerals like zinc, iron, vitamin C may cause tremors. You should also give him supplements. Get him clinically examined by a Neurologist. He should get few blood works, nerve conduction velocity tests, EEG, etc., done. He will be treated accordingly. He is oversleeping.

He should do walking in the early morning and evening in fresh air, where there is little pollution so that he can get a lot of oxygen naturally. He should get connected with a Physical therapist so that he can do the required exercises to strengthen his muscles. Depression, anxiety, and stressful mental states in general can keep a person awake at night, making them prone to sleepiness during the day. Insomnia, fatigue, environmental factors like inhaling toxic fumes may cause excessive sleep.

If possible help him take a break from work and take rest at home. Let him take quality sleep. Do not disturb him when he is sleeping. He should stay away from smoking, alcohol or addictions if any. He should get massage therapy, CBT as well so that he feels fresh. Get a complete medical check up done to rule out any pathology causing him such symptoms. He will be treated accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
