What Causes Trichomonas Vaginal Infection?

hi my name is lori and I have had a discharge from my vagina I went to the er room and was told I have trichomonas problem is I have not had sex since 2000 and have had 2 papsmers in 3 years which never turned up how is this possible it has to be wrong what can I do about it
