What Causes Trichomoniasis?

My co-worker was Dx with Lupus 4 years ago along with glomerulonephritis. She has had multiple kidney Bx and u/a tests over this period of time. Today she was told that her u/a shows trichomonas. She has not been sexually active in over 2 years and a u/a done last week did not show this result, nor did a kidney biopsy last October. How did this happen???

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Trichomoniasis is spread by sex but old trichomonas germs can get reactivated by the destruction of normal vaginal flora due to antibiotics taken for illness (this flora normally prevents infection of the vagina).

Absence of normal vaginal flora facilitates any infection by organisms present in the genital tract. Fungal infection is possible in case of bad genital hygiene.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
