What Causes Twitching In The Thumb Finger?

Hi! My son is 15 and his left thumb has been twitching for almost a month now. He does play his guitar a lot and he is left hand but play the guitar with his right hand. So he does hold the guitar by the neck. Would that have cause the damage to his thumb? How can we get rid of the twitching?
