Thanks for contacting with your health concern and following things should be kept in mind in case of oral herpes:

1. although mostly [in 90% cases] the immune system of a person clears the Herpes virus in two years but may remain dormant in the body and reappear again if there is weakened immunity of the patient [like occurrence of diabetes, tuberculosis, thyroid problem, recurrent cold]

PS. 80% of cases of oral herpes infection is caused by HPV I and rest 20% by HPV II

2. In order to acquire a definite diagnosis, your attending doctor could go for relevant laboratory tests like:

. a sample from the sore to identify the virus
. culture
. blood sampling for antibodies study, and till you consult an Infectious specialist doctor [for anti viral medicines], self care which can be done at home is/are:

. plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration
. use acetaminophen/ibuprofen for fever-muscle aches
. avoid touching saliva, skin or mucous membrane of infected person
. it is your moral duty to tell your partner [wife] about the same and if she is comfortable then make maximum effort to protect her:
. get her an HPV vaccine
. practice safe sex [use latex condom to prevent genital herpes]
