What Causes Uncomfortable Swallowing After Removal Of Thyroid Glossal Cyst?

I am a 58 yr old woman, who had a thyroid glossal cyst removed in sept of 2011. The last couple of days I feel as though I have something that is making swallowing uncomfortable, does not hurt, but almost feels like something is in the way of normal swallowing . I had the sistrunk procedure and no other problems. Do you think that the cyst is coming back or something else.

Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I have read your question fully and understand your concerns.

The discomfort that you have while swallowing could be due to GERD or may be due to a mild viral pharyngitis (mild sore throat need not be painful) as it has started only 2 days back.

You could follow some conservative management with anti-inflammatory medicine for the sore throat - for e.g. Ibuprofen 200 mg -400 mg 2-3 times/day, provided you are not allergic to it. Take the tablets for 4-5 days, with food so that you do not get gastric irritation. You could also do salt water gargles.

You can also take acidity reducing tablets called Proton Pump Inhibitors (for e.g. Omeprazole 40 mg/Lansoprazole 30 mg etc.) for 2 weeks and see if the discomfort settles down. Proton Pump inhibitors should be taken on an empty stomach preferably. If the discomfort still does not settle down after the above treatment, kindly see your doctor.

Recurrence after Sistrunk operation can occur but it occurs in only a very small percentage of people. So, we can think of other causes first rather than recurrence.

I hope this answer has helped you.

Thank you
