What Causes Unexplained Rash On Face And Swelling Around Mouth?

I have an unexplained rash on my face, including some swelling around my mouth and itching extending to behind my ears. This is the 2nd day I experience this and the 2nd time - The first time was about 6 months ago - I attributed it then to possible excessive exfoliation attempts to help smooth my old face, the day before. This time I can t attribute it to that. WEBMD symptom checker seemed to point me to a carcinoid tumor! Because of IBS symptoms, I ve had several gastro tests to rule out other things, but the attempt to do a pill endoscopy - which was also done to explain a chronic low red (& white) cell & low iron results on blood tests, was not successful since I was not cleaned out enough for the doctor to see what was there. Does carcinoid tumor in my small intestine explain low blood counts along with these facial rash episodes? I am a 71 year old female.

I can understand your concern. What you are explaining seems more like an allergic reaction than any complication related to small intestine as you are experiencing swelling along with itching in the area concerned.

I would advise you to start antihistamines to control the allergic reaction effectively. You can take Levocetrizine 5 mg (Levocet) or Loratidine 10 mg (Lorfast) once a day for 5 days. If it would be an allergic reaction, it will come under control or will reduce in intensity after these medicines.

If you experience recurrent episodes such as this in future, you should go for a blood test for allergy to find out what substance you are allergic to. If the medicines don't help, visiting a dermatologist is advised.
