What Causes Unexplained Tenderness In Rib Cage?

What are some things that would cause my left rib cage to stick out and be a little tender. I haven t fallen or been injured. But it is changing the shape of my ribs on the left side. Any suggestions are appreciated. I hope Its not life threatening. Thank you
