What Causes Unusual Heavy Bleeding?

My wife who is 45 has been having unusual heavy bleeding over the past two months. She has visited her OB/GYN for testing, has been put on birth control to help alleviate the bleeding and has had an ultrasound done a few weeks ago. She s had three kids, the youngest is 23, and had her tubes tied back then. She doesn t have any severe abdominal pain that seems to occur with others in her situation. This Friday she goes in for a biopsy to find out why her uterus wall is thickening. From one of her past visits, the doctor did mention the possibility of a hysterectomy which has her concerned, but, quite frankly, is freaking me out. I ve always been the strong supportive husband to her and I can t really tell her of all the horror stories I ve read online from other ladies (and husbands) over the last few weeks, and maybe this will all test out ok, but any info on this matter could definitely reduce some anxiety.
