Hello,
The following are few probable causes of swollen knee:
1) Trauma causing fracture
2) Bursitis
3) Meniscal tear
4) Collateral ligament injury
5) Tendonitis
6) Severe osteoarthritis
7) Rheumatoid arthritis
8) Joint infection
9) Tumors
My recommendations are as follows:
1) Clinical examination of your knee
2) X-ray knee joint
3) Pain relieving medications like NSAIDs
Ibuprofen or
Naproxen to be taken twice daily for 5 days.
4) To prevent gastric irritation, tab. Pantop to be taken before food.
5) Opioids like
hydrocodone,
oxycodone and
Tramadol can also be used in the place of NSAIDs.
If the pain and swelling don't subside even after above treatment, you may need to consult an orthopedic specialist.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
