What Causes Unusual Sensation In Fibula And Swelling Of Knee?

Playing soccer felt a tweak when turning funny, when I came of I could feel a sensation from my top of calf / fibula area. Now my knee is swollen around the front and feels awkward if I bring my ankle towards my glute. Plus there is a bruise over the upper fibula area. Any recommendations

Hello,

The following are few probable causes of swollen knee:
1) Trauma causing fracture
2) Bursitis
3) Meniscal tear
4) Collateral ligament injury
5) Tendonitis
6) Severe osteoarthritis
7) Rheumatoid arthritis
8) Joint infection
9) Tumors

My recommendations are as follows:
1) Clinical examination of your knee
2) X-ray knee joint
3) Pain relieving medications like NSAIDs Ibuprofen or Naproxen to be taken twice daily for 5 days.
4) To prevent gastric irritation, tab. Pantop to be taken before food.
5) Opioids like hydrocodone, oxycodone and Tramadol can also be used in the place of NSAIDs.

If the pain and swelling don't subside even after above treatment, you may need to consult an orthopedic specialist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist

General & Family Physician Dr. Sunny Madar's  Response
Hi,

MRI can tell if even minor ligament is tear, ice, raise, brace can help, if swollen may need antibiotics for few days, best is to check once with a local physician or orthopedist, analgesic or spray can be taken over the counter too.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
