What Causes Unusual Taste And Smell While Treating Flu And Sinusitis?

My husband was diagnosed with a sinus infection, pretty sure he also has the flu because of all the symptoms he s having and several people at work were diagnosed. Now he is having strong tastes and smells of chlorine and food tastes horrible to the point of nausea. He is on antibiotics and this is day 7.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It looks like bad taste and smell is due to the ongoing infection in sinuses. As the infection will gradually subside the smell and taste will improve. As it is already 7 days there should have been some improvement by now. If there is some improvement that he can notice then it is fine otherwise you can consult your Physician and get evaluated. The antibiotics might need to be changed and along with it he can also do steam inhalations with a few drops of eucalyptus oil in water. Also chew flavored sugar free chewing gum as it helps in masking bad taste. Drinking plenty of water can help. Clean tongue using a tongue scraper.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
