What Causes Upset Stomach And Constant Sweet Taste In The Mouth?

Hi My husband just found out that he is diabetic and is taking metformin but he also has congestive heart failure and is taking alot of pills for that. But starting yesterday he is starting to have an upset stomach and he has a sweet taste in his mouth. He is taking carvidolel, spronlactone, amilodipine, entresto(he just started that about a month ago). Potassium, fourosimide. He would like to know what it might be. It seems like it is getting worse everyday.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Metformin is one of the best medications for diabetes. It reduces the body's resistance to its own insulin so that the insulin inside can work better.

It does not cause weight gain like some diabetic meds (may cause weight loss in some persons) and it does not cause low blood sugars (hypoglycemia- it would only push the blood sugar to normal, not lower.

Like all medications however, there are potential side effects, it upsets the stomach, particularly when it is first used.
It can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, abdominal discomfort, abnormal taste.

In many cases, the symptoms decrease with continued use.

Another option would be another form of metformin, metformin xr. This type is released slowly into the body so that persons are a lot less likely to have side effects.

I hope this helps
