General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Having more than 3 bowel movements a day is considered diarrhea. The most common reason for recent onset diarrhea is infection.

The most common causes for chronic or prolonged diarrhea are:
(1) Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
(2) Infection
(3) Inflammatory Bowel Disease such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis
(4) Thyroid disease
(5) Uncontrolled Diabetes affecting nerve function of the gut
(6) Food Intolerance or allergy

It would be best to be assessed to determine the cause for you.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
