What Causes Urge To Drink Water Throughout The Night?

19 years old. 5 6, 168 pounds. I ve been having terrible anxiety and really bad thirst right before I go to bed each night. It s so terrible I find myself trying to even breath differently so I won t have to get up and get water over and over again. it isn t my blood sugar, I already got tested for this and the doctor said I was in good health. I don t drink any kinds or soda, I m always drinking water. It causes me to swear a lot and feel extreamly uncomfortable while laying down trying to sleep. I stay awake mosts nights so I can keep drinking water. Anything would be helpful at this point, thank you! - Kori

Hello,
Welcome to Health Care Magic.
I understand your concern.
You are apparently suffering from a anxiety disorder known as “Panic Disorder”. In this illness there is sudden onset of extreme anxiety associated with chest discomfort/chest pain, choking sensation in throat, dryness in mouth, dizziness, headache, palpitation, increased heart beat, churning sensation in abdomen, hot flushes or cold extremities, tremors, fear of impending doom (feeling as if going to die) or fear of going crazy. The condition arises abruptly and builds up very fast. It mimics heart attack and often leads to emergency hospitalization, unnecessary medications and investigations.
In your case, it appears that you have many of symptoms suggestive of repeated panic attacks. Dryness of throat and difficulty in breathing are well recognized symptoms of such an illness. You developed a habit of drinking water repeatedly to wet throat in an attempt to get rid of anxiety symptoms, but it is may lead to further problems as below:-
1.     Increased water intake also increases the frequency of urination, thus causing regular awakening and disturbed sleep at night.
2.      Over-hydration may lead to hyponatremia (reduced blood sodium level) which may further worsen the anxiety symptoms.
This illness can be treated with psychiatric medicines and psychotherapy. You must consult a psychiatrist to get cured of your anxiety problem. I wish you all the best.
