What Causes Urinary And Bowel Incontinence In An Elderly Person?
My dad is 74 and he is lethargic, and doesn t seem to be able to get out of bed in the last week. he is very weak and running a low grade fever. some days he urinates an deficates himself because he is too weak to walk six steps to the bathroom. He has been self suficient and taking care of himself prior to this onset of symptoms. He has been dehydrated and received 3 IV bags of sugar water, He has no appetite. He has been to the E-room two times this past week and his doctor two times. they gave him an antibiotic due to low grade fever. His blood tests come back fine, any suggestions?
Your history suggests that your father has lost voluntary control over urination and defecation which can occur due to muscle weakness or nerve weakness. I suggest you to consult your physician for clinical assessment if these episodes recur. Low grade fever could be due to infection. I suggest you to consult your physician for treatment of fever also. Intake of adequate calories and nutrition is of paramount importance.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Shailja Puri, Pathologist and Microbiologist
