What Causes Urinary Incontinence Along With Difficulty In Walking?

My F-I-L is an 89 y/o man. He has presented with urinary incontinence, shuffling gait and @ times his one leg just will not move to walk when stands. He also has become foggier in his communication and memory. His neurologist is suspecting Hydrocephalus and wants to do a test to measure pressure in his brain. He s had an MRI. Is a shunt usually indicated for this age?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The triad of incontinence, memory problem and gait problem is a typical presentation of Normal pressure hydrocephalus. This is quite reversible thing if done on time .So yes he is a candidate for the shunt.

There is generally a very good response to the shunt in this disease. So get it done earlier than late.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
