What Causes Uterine Contractions During Pregnancy?

I am 29 almost 30 weeks pregnant with my 3rd child doctor checked me and said I was thinned out but not dilating and said that my cervix is bulging I am extremely uncomfortable I feel like there is a balloon inside wanting to pop is this normal and I told him I feel like I m having contractions
