What Causes Vaginal Bleeding After Lifting Heavy Weights?

Two times far between I had a very slight discharge of vaginal blood after lifting heavy weights. So slight that if I had not looked at the toilet paper it would have gone unnoticed. Is heavy lifting the cause. Only happened these 2 times when lifting.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your finding with blood on the toilet paper may have occurred secondary to your urine from urinary tract rather than as vaginal bleeding because excessive physical exercise such as heavy lifting is known to cause exercise-induced hematuria (blood in your urine coming from the bladder or another urinary tract), but not from the vaginal canal.

It is not a common finding, but it sometimes happens, and the cause is unknown. It may be linked to dehydration or the breakdown of red blood cells from strenuous exercise.

I advise you to drink plenty of fluids to work on oral hydration before, during and after the exercise.

If this continues, you may want to follow up with your primary care doctor to have more work up including urine testing.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Katie Lee, General & Family Physician
