What Causes Vaginal Bleeding And Elevated HCG Levels In Post Menopause?
I am postmenopausal, 55 years old, with a history of vaginal spotting, benign ovarian cysts, and bladder infections. Recent laperoscopy, D&C and hystoscopy were normal. Subsequent vaginal bleeding (3 months later). Last week repeated the D&C, hystoscopy and cystoscopy...awaiting results. Informed today that presurgical bloodwork showed a positive result for pregnancy based on HCG levels (unknown level...need to retest). What is the possible cause for bleeding and elevated HCG levels?
Hi dear, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Irregular bleeding in the post menopausal periods can be due to endometrial hyperplasia or carcinoma, senile endometritis, or due to the hormonal disturbances caused by the ovarian cyst. Beta hCG levels can be elevated in pregnancy, gestational trophoblastic disease and in certain ovarian tumours. Since pregnancy is highly unlikely in postmenopausal age group, the other two conditions should be properly investigated, diagnosis and treatment should be done accordingly.
