What Causes Vaginal Bleeding And Spotting After Taking Plan-B?
Hello Dr. Rynne, I took plan B three weeks ago. A week after I took the pill I had heavy bleeding for a good three days. It has been three weeks now since I first took the pill and I just started having light spotting today; is that my actual period slowly coming and just not being as strong as usual because of the intense birth control?? or might it be something I should look into? Much Thanks
Plan B contains levonorgestrel which acts as an emergency contraceptive pill to prevent unwanted pregnancy when taken within 72 hours after unprotected sex or when birth control fails. It mainly works by hindering and stopping the release of an egg from the ovary. Common side effects of Plan B are menstrual changes, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, spotting between the periods, tiredness, headache, dizziness, breast pain and enlargement, diarrhoea, heavier or lighter menstrual bleeding, fatigue, dysmenorrhea, irregular menstruation, oligomenorrhea, vaginal discharge, vaginal infections, allergic reactions etc. If these effects persist or bother you, then you should contact you doctor for medical help.
Take care. Hope I have answered your questions. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Zubayer Alam, General And Family Physician
