What Causes Vaginal Itching?

Hi I am a female 49 , I have been very itchy around my vagina for the past 3 weeks. I used a 3 day monistat treatment and just Friday I took the one day pill that a doctor prescribed me for maybe a yeast infection. it is not working. What can be causing the itching? It gets really bad sometimes what can I do ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The most common cause is a yeast infection which would usually be treated with the monistat and tablet (likely fluconazole).
Some persons require a longer course eg 3 days of fluconazole or a longer course of topical medication.

A swab of the vaginal area may be needed if there is no response to the longer course.

I hope this helps
