What Causes Vaginal Yeast Infection?

I had a hysterectomy about twenty years ago. I just had an exam, and have been told that I have a vaginal yeast infection. I do have some itching, one of the symptoms. I have been given cream and a pill to take (which I have taken). What is the prognosis and perhaps other symptoms? Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for the question
Vaginal yeast infection is most commonly caused by Candida Albicans.Several factors like hygeine, high blood sugar levels, recent use of antibiotics, lack of diet rich in probiotics etc can cause yeast infection.
The prognosis is very good.Vaginal yeast infections clear up completely with treatment. In mild cases they clear up even without treatment.
Along with medications some home remedies also help to clear the infection and prevent future episodes. Some of these include keeping the area clean and dry, wiping from front to back after using toilet, wearing cotton under wear, avoid tight fitting clothes ,eating food with probiotics( like yogurt) and do not use douches/vaginal sprays.
Hope I answered your question
