What Causes Vein "popping" In The Neck With Pain?

The vein on the left side of my neck seems to "pop"; I've noticed it does this when I am talking excitedly. Usualy when I am stressed and angry. It concerns me because when it "pops", a sharp pain rns through that area. Pain does not continue, thankfully, afterward. I wonder if it is a blood clot; though I am not sure. I'm sure this question has alreasy been asked, however, I don't know where else to go. Thank you for listening.
