What Causes Vertical Ridges On Finger Nails?

I have always had vertical ridges on all my finger nails bar 2. Middle finger and index finger on both hands are the only fingers not affected. Could you tell me please, what causes them? How I can prevent, and also treat them? Why are same fingers on both hands smooth, and not affected by these unsightly ridges?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
The ridges on your nails are caused by the nail building cells. The nail building cells are not uniform hence they can cause irregularities in growing nails. This is completely normal and should not cause you any concern
