I was just wondering if the plaquenil is causing the dizziness I am having? Also is there a new drug available to treat lupus. Sorry to bother you, I didn t know this would cost me. I will talk to my doctor when I go to them next month. Thank you

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Long-term side effects of Plaquenil. Basically an anti-malarial drug, Plaquenil is also found to be effective in the treatment of various autoimmune disorders including lupus.

When used for short periods of time, its side effects usually are rare. However, when it is used for a long time and/or in high doses, side effects like ringing or buzzing in ears, vertigo, nausea, and vomiting or hearing loss are more likely to occur and may be serious.

In view of the above, I advise you to consult your treating doctor for an alternate effective medicine for lupus or to adjust the dose of Plaquenil.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
