What Causes Vertigo And Shortness Of Breath?

I have experienced vertigo along with palpitations (around 200) and the feeling that I become short of breath when I just wake up and still lay down on the bed , which causes me to become very emotional and anxious. It takes about less then 1 minute sometimes 2 times following each other. What could these symptoms mean? Should I be concerned, I m only 26 years old?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
According to your description, you are suffering from vertigo, palpitation and anxiety episodes. There is quite a few diseases which can cause these symptoms, but common causes are cardiac (Heart), Endocrine (hormone related) and psychogenic.

Heart - it might be due to some type of arrythmia (irregular heart beat) like Paroxysmal Supra Ventricular Tachycardia or something like that. An ECG, Holter Monitoring & Echocardiography are some screening tests to diagnose the case.

Hormonal- These type of symptoms may arise from increased thyroxine level (Thyrotoxicosis). a very rare tumor of adrenal gland named Pheochromocytoma causes sudden palpitation like episode. Both these conditions are diagnosed by some blood biomarkers and imaging technique. Both are treatable by medicines and surgery.

Psychogenic- at your age, if you are living a stressful life, there is pretty high chance that you are suffering from 'Panic Disorder'. But before confirmed diagnosis, other medical conditions should be ruled out. An anxiolytic and in some cases a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) is prescribed to control the panic attacks.

However, I have only discussed the most common possibilities. These type of symptoms need thorough evaluation and please visit your GP for final diagnosis.
