What Causes Violent Cough With Excessive Mucus Discharge After Using Neti Pot?

For the last 3 weeks I have had a racking cough that produces lots of mucus. In the morning I use a Netti Pot and green "stuff" is coming out. I feel quite tired but, the cough has been violent at times. No fever at all. I just feel that "sick" feeling all over. Should I take a Zpak or something or, let it take its course? Its been a long three weeks though!

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain violent coughing along with phlegm can be due to a few causes like chronic upper respiratory tract infection, bronchitis, lung infection, allergies etc..
I would suggest you to consult an ENT expert or a Pulmonologist and get evaluated and he can advise you investigations like Throat swab culture, chest x ray, sputum culture etc to rule out the exact cause of the problem and treatment can be planned accordingly..

He can advise you antibiotics like Azithromycin, anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen, mucolytics like Ambroxol, cough suppressants containing Guaifenesin and Dextromethorphan, warm saline gargles, steam inhalations and use a humidifier in your room..
