What Causes Violent Coughing And Tickling Sensation In The Throat?

I have been having violent coughing spasms for 3 years now. I have seen many doctors and no results have been found. I ve lost my job from these spasms. I can feel when they start to come on. The right side of my throat will get a tickle and my inner right ear. These are some things that trigger them: 1. Eating something too dry or spicy 2. Laughing too hard 3. Crying 4. Cleaning out ears 5. Talking too much 6. Opening mouth too wide 7. Or no particular reason at all. 8. Talking in a higher pitch When the spasms happen I sweat, throw up, can t breath, can t open my eyes wet myself, and after it is done I have to lay down because I m so exhausted from it. I can t sleep consistently so I m always tired.. I m just fed up. I can t take it anymore.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

A cough that has persisted for more than 8 weeks is called a chronic cough. The main causes of chronic cough are:

(1) post nasal drip of mucus to the back of the throat. This is the most common cause and would be associated with the tickling sensation that you are experiencing. Treated with an antihistamine/decongestant combination, in some additional medication is needed

(2) GERD- reflux is another common cause

(3) asthma

(4) non asthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis- the presence of eosinophils in the lungs, associated with inflammation, and treated with steroid inhalers

Since post nasal drip is most common, you can consider treating for this with the anti histamine decongestant combination (that is, zyrtec d, allegra d, claritine d, benadryl d).

It can sometimes take 2 to 3 weeks for an initial response.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
