Hi,
A cough that has persisted for more than 8 weeks is called a
chronic cough. The main causes of chronic cough are:
(1)
post nasal drip of mucus to the back of the throat. This is the most common cause and would be associated with the tickling sensation that you are experiencing. Treated with an antihistamine/decongestant combination, in some additional medication is needed
(2) GERD- reflux is another common cause
(3) asthma
(4) non asthmatic eosinophilic bronchitis- the presence of eosinophils in the lungs, associated with inflammation, and treated with
steroid inhalers
Since post nasal drip is most common, you can consider treating for this with the anti histamine decongestant combination (that is, zyrtec d,
allegra d, claritine d,
benadryl d).
It can sometimes take 2 to 3 weeks for an initial response.
I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
