What Causes Vivid Nightmares When Diagnosed With PTSD?

I was diagnosed with PTSD about 2 years ago. I have been seeing a therapist for about a year. I have and am experiencing horrible dreams/memories that are not controllable anymore. I had a anger filled meltdown with crying and screaming and couldn't hardly control myself. General people are telling me this is normal for my situation?? Is it?
