What Causes Vocal Cracking When One Tries To Sing?

I think that my 77 year old sister might have cysts or nodules on her vocal cords. Her regular voice appears to be the same as always, but when she tries to sing, her voice cracks and jumps all over the place. Please, what are the symptoms of having cysts or nodules on the vocal cords and is there anything that can be done for this situation. Your help would be greatly appreciated. John

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hello,
Voice abuse, misuse, gastroesophageal reflux disease are all known to cause benign lesios in vocal cords. These are vocal cord polyps, nodules, cysts, sulcus etc.All of this presents with a hoarse (a change in quality) voice. The initial examination of such cases are done by ENT specialist and further investigations might be needed like stroboscopic examination/tele laryngoscopy to confirm the diagnosis. It is important to avoid voice abuses like singing, screaming to prevent further damage to vocal cords
