What Causes Vomiting And Diarrhoea Along With Severe Weakness?

Wife and I ate homemade sandwiches made of avocado, green leaf lettuce, tomato, and whole grain bread (no meat or cheese). I had noticed leafy lettuce had soil, washed it out (I thought). Two to three hours later both wife and I were violently ill, vomiting; then diarrhea following. Several days later still very weak, even after sleeping 16 hours a day. Unfortunately away from home. Anything to be concerned about, or will we feel better in a few days?

Sounds like you had a strong case of food poisoning. Most of these are self-limited and don't require any kind of antibiotic therapy. Treatment is symptomatic. Push the fluids, starting just with clear liquids. If this is tolerated, add simple easy to digest foods such as dry toast, crackers, hot cereals. Avoid milk and fatty foods initially. Potassium-containing foods such as bananas are helpful, since you probably lost a lot of potassium with the diarrhea and vomiting. Sports drinks such as Powerade or Gatorade may be helpful to supply some of these lost nutrients. You should feel better in a few days. A lot of your weakness etc may be due to dehydration, so drink lots of fluids. Hope this helps.
