What Causes Vomiting Post Intake Of Hydroxide?

My mother has been on Hydrocodone 10/Acetominophen 325 for 6 weeks since back surgery (for a few weeks prior to surgery due to bulging disc) and today was prescribed Hydroxide 7.5/325. 2 hours post dose, vomiting violently. It s a lower dose, same manufacturer... any thoughts?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Hydrocodone can cause nausea and vomiting but if she has been using this medication for 6 weeks with no problems and it is the same manufacturer then the chance that it is linked to the medication is reduced.

If you wish to definitely rule out this medication then she can use plain paracetamol/acetaminophen, for a few doses to see if the vomiting is reduced.

It is possible that it is entirely unrelated and she may have a viral or bacterial illness.
This is the most common reason for acute vomiting.

It is self limiting, lasting only a few days in most adults. Treatment would consist of fluid replacement and meds to decrease the vomiting.
She would have to use a small amount of fluids frequently because if she uses large amounts, she would have the urge to vomit.

Medications such as dramamine or pepto bismol would reduce vomiting.

I hope this helps
